One of the things that I love most about photography is how you begin to look at things around you differently. Once you become obsessed (yes obsessed is a good word) with photography you will never look at the world in the same way again. I will often comment to Steve about the colour of the light hitting something and he will look at me like I have two heads. He doesn’t see the colour of the light until I draw his attention to it. As photographers we have a tendency to look at the details, like textures, leading lines, repetitive shapes and of course how the light hits an object. Sometimes the simplest things can make the most beautiful photograph. An example of this is found in the shots below of a simple Iceberg rose. In rose circles the Iceberg isn’t considered ‘nobility’ by any stretch of the imagination, but it is actually the simplicity of this beautiful white rose being lit from behind which gives it the transparent soft glow that brings this picture to life. You can see how the different directions of light used in these photographs creates a completely different feel to each image. The back lit image almost looks etherial whilst the second image shows the shape of the petals and highlights and shadows more as it is lit from the window light on the left hand side. Against such a simple white rose those beautiful dainty stamens just look so pretty. The white background makes the yellow and green in the centre of the rose just pop. Sometimes less is more …
